*Markdown alternate of <https://lasertally.app/sldprt-to-step>. Lasertally is Windows desktop software that
quotes laser-cut parts for fabrication shops from CAD files, then nests the won
job on sheet or tube. Unrelated to "laser tally" in oil and gas.*

SLDPRT to STEP

# Convert SLDPRT to STEP.

Drop a SOLIDWORKS part file (.sldprt) below and get a STEP file back in seconds, free, with no account and without SOLIDWORKS. The conversion runs in your browser, so the part never leaves your computer, and the STEP is read back and checked against the original solid before you can download it.

Your file never leaves your computer: the conversion runs in your browser.

## Why send STEP instead of SLDPRT

A .sldprt file opens in SOLIDWORKS and not much else. Laser shops, machine shops, other CAD systems and most CAM software ask for STEP, because every one of them can read it. The usual way to get one is to open the part in SOLIDWORKS and choose Save As. This does the same job when SOLIDWORKS is not on the computer in front of you, or when a customer has sent a part you cannot open.

## What the STEP keeps

- The exact solid, face for face. Planes, cylinders, cones, fillets and freeform surfaces are written as they were modelled, not as a mesh.
- Every body of a multi-body part.
- Millimetres, in STEP AP214, the version most CAD and CAM systems ask for.
What it does not keep is the feature tree. Sketches, features, configurations and history stay in the SLDPRT; the STEP is the finished solid. Colours and annotations stay behind too.

## Which SOLIDWORKS files work

Parts saved by SOLIDWORKS 2015 or later. Earlier files use an older container the converter does not read, and assemblies (.sldasm) are refused with the reason. If the reader cannot rebuild a part's solid exactly, it says so and converts nothing, rather than handing you a STEP that is almost right.

## How the STEP is checked

The STEP is read back with a STEP reader, not the one that read your SLDPRT, and its volume, surface area and bounding box are compared with the solid that came out of the part file. They must agree to one part in a million, and to 0.001 mm on size, with the same number of solids.

Credits and licences for the projects the converter is built on are on the converter page.

## Questions

### Do I need SOLIDWORKS to convert SLDPRT to STEP?

No. The converter reads the SLDPRT file itself, so it works on any computer with a current browser. SOLIDWORKS is only needed to edit the part's features.

### Which STEP version does it write?

STEP AP214, in millimetres. AP214 is the version most CAD and CAM systems ask for, and it carries the exact solid geometry.

### Why was my SLDPRT refused?

The usual reasons are a file saved before SOLIDWORKS 2015, an assembly rather than a part, or a part whose solid the reader cannot rebuild exactly. The page names the reason. In each case, saving the part as STEP from SOLIDWORKS gets you there.

## Quoting laser-cut parts from files like these?

Lasertally is Windows software for fabrication shops. It opens STEP, IGES, DXF and NC1 files, measures the pierces, cut length and bends off the geometry, and prices the part on your own rate card.
