STEP to IGES

# Convert STEP to IGES.

Convert a STEP file (.step, .stp) to IGES (.igs) for software that will not take STEP, free and with no account. The conversion runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer, and the IGES is read back and compared with the STEP's solid before you can download it.

Your file never leaves your computer: the conversion runs in your browser.

## Why convert STEP to IGES

Usually because something downstream asks for it: an older CAM system, a machine controller's import, a customer's specification. Both formats carry exact geometry, so nothing has to be approximated. The converter writes the same faces again in IGES's terms.

## What changes, and what does not

- The geometry does not. Every face is written as it was read, in millimetres.
- Assemblies are flattened. A STEP file holding several parts becomes one IGES file holding all their solids, each where it sat, without the assembly structure.
- Colours, layers and product names are dropped. Geometry only.

## How the IGES is checked

IGES stores faces, not solids, so the converter reads its output back and sews the faces together again, which is the job a program importing it has to do, though one that sews at a tighter tolerance may leave faces apart. The sewn result must match the STEP's volume and surface area to one part in a million and its size to 0.001 mm, with the same number of solids.

Credits and licences for the projects the converter is built on are on the converter page.

## Questions

### Will the IGES open as a solid?

Not guaranteed. The converter only offers the file after sewing it back into the same solid itself, closing gaps of up to 0.1 mm, and that is all it proves, because another CAD system may sew at a tighter tolerance and leave faces apart. Some older programs import every IGES as loose surfaces regardless, and need their own knit or sew command.

### What happens to a STEP assembly?

It is flattened. Every solid in the assembly goes into the one IGES file, in place, but the parts are no longer grouped as an assembly.

### Is STEP to IGES lossy?

Not for geometry. Both formats describe exact surfaces, and the faces are written as they were read. What is dropped is the extra data: colours, names, layers and the assembly tree.

## Quoting laser-cut parts from files like these?

Lasertally is Windows software for fabrication shops. It opens STEP, IGES, DXF and NC1 files, measures the pierces, cut length and bends off the geometry, and prices the part on your own rate card.
